WORDS IN PICTURES
PICTURES IN WORDS

The exhibition focuses on visual poetry, exploring the relationship between visual expression and the written language. It consists of selected works from Steinprent, the Faroe Islands' Graphic Workshop.

May 9 - August 10

For many of the visual artists associated with Steinprent, the written word is central. Faroese poet and artist Tóroddur Poulsen, for instance, has always seen written words in terms of images - as something visual, which for him, like actual pictures, are a kind of painted poetry.

Several of the artists exhibited are also poets or authors, practicing some kind of literary or written work alongside the visual. They actively combine images and the lyrical arts into a kind of visual poetry. Others are inspired by words in general, whether drawn from great literature or just isolated sentences from comic strips, articles or adverts. What each of the artists has in common, though, is the significance of written language to their art.
