Ehler’s title is an African proverb she saw graffitied on a dungeon wall at Fort Prinzenstein in Keta, Ghana. Her flag moderates the phrase via the medium of crushed charcoal. The fort was built by the Danes in 1784 and served as an important transit point for the Danish transatlantic slave trade.
