When Jette Hye Jin Mortensen became a mother, a DNA test revealed that in addition to her Korean roots, she also has Japanese heritage. In Korea, new mothers eat a special seaweed soup. The enzyme that makes seaweed edible to humans comes from a marine bacterium that “went ashore” on the islands that later became Japan.
